Australian Open And F1 GP Could Be Forced Offshore Due To Border Closures

Following the Australian Federal Government’s budget prediction that international borders will stay closed until 2022, the Australian Open, and the Australian Formula One (F1) Grand Prix (GP), could be forced offshore.

As reported by the ABC, Dubai and Doha would be among the potential host cities in the event of a relocation of the 2022 grand slam.

Dissimilar to Australian laws, players participating in WTA and ATP events around the world are put in a bubble environment, allowing them to train and compete without strict self-isolation.

It is unlikely that players will be willing to spend two weeks in quarantine in early 2022, following many notable outcries from players at this year’s tournament, including Bernard Tomic and Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, the Australian F1 GP faces an uncertain future, as the competition will need quarantine arrangements to be relaxed in order for the tournament to proceed.

The Brazilian GP takes place on November 7, making it impossible for teams to complete a two week quarantine period before the start of the Australian equivalent, which has been moved from March to November.

Speaking with the ABC, Australian GP chief executive, Andrew Westacott, said he remains confident the event will go ahead.

“We’re working very, very closely in concert with the Victorian government on every aspect of the COVID-safe plan and also the arrangement for the international contingent,” Westacott said.

“As you can imagine, it’s something very, very complex, it’s very, very much a work-in-progress, and we’re working with the Victorian government, particularly the Department of Health and CQV, on every one of the details right now,” he said.
