The 2026 Australian Open has set staggered new benchmarks for both physical attendance and domestic broadcast engagement.
The tournament, which concluded on 1 February 2026, officially welcomed a record 1,368,043 fans to the Melbourne Park precinct over the three-week period, comfortably surpassing the previous 2025 record of 1,218,831.
The attendance record lies in the successful expansion of the “Opening Week” (qualifying) and the high-stakes narrative of the final rounds. Opening Week attendance surged to 217,999, nearly doubling the 2025 figure, while the main draw alone pulled over 1.15 million people. This physical growth was matched by a digital explosion, as Nine Network recorded its most dominant Friday of the decade, driven by a semi-final double-header featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Nine Network’s coverage of Day 13 reached a National Total TV Reach of 3.657 million viewers, making it the #1 program in Australia.
Semi-Final Surge: The night session featuring Carlos Alcaraz’s marathon five-set victory over Alexander Zverev saw a massive 160% year-on-year increase in BVOD (9Now) audience, peaking at 427,000.
Late-Night Stakes: The second semi-final, where Novak Djokovic dethroned defending champion Jannik Sinner in another five-set epic, reached 3.209 million viewers, with BVOD figures up 152%.
Total Audience Impact: The Night Session average audience of 1.974 million represented an 84% jump from the same night in 2025, marking the second-highest non-final session for Total TV since Ash Barty’s 2022 run.
The record-breaking attendance across Rod Laver, Margaret Court, and John Cain arenas has solidified the event’s status as a premier global commercial vehicle.
Aussie Success: Local interest was suportted by Olivia Gadecki and John Peers, who successfully defended their Mixed Doubles title. Their victory helped drive a Day Session reach of 2.522 million, up 125% year-on-year.
Market Shares: Nine recorded the #1 commercial free-to-air shares on Friday across all key demographics, demonstrating the tournament’s ability to “halo” other programming even during late-night tennis overruns.
By mixing the “festival” atmosphere of Opening Week with high-drama evening sessions on the 9Network, the organisation has successfully expanded the tournament’s commercial visibility in the Australian community.
