In a significant development for the National Rugby League (NRL), the ARL Commission has approved a AUD$50 million bid for the Western Bears to enter the league in 2027, marking their return to the sport after a 25-year hiatus.
The revised, enhanced offer from the Western Australian government proved pivotal, transitioning from an initial proposal of AUD$35 million over five years.
The commission’s in-principle acceptance of this updated bid now awaits formal endorsement from the existing 17 NRL clubs.
Anticipation surrounds the clubs’ imminent vote, which is expected to formalise the Western Bears’ place in the upcoming Telstra Premiership season.
Peter V’landys, the chairman of the ARL Commission, alongside NRL CEO, Andrew Abdo, has actively engaged in negotiations over the past fortnight, navigating what appeared to be a collapse in talks.
V’landys maintained optimism regarding the deal’s viability, despite concerns that AFL interests aimed to undermine rugby league’s entry into the Western Australian market.
At the core of discussions was the financial aspect; the NRL had initially sought AUD$120 million over a decade, not simply as a licence fee but as a critical investment in establishing a robust rugby league presence in Western Australia.
The latest financial proposal from the WA government added not only the AUD$35 million but also an additional AUD$20 million earmarked for the development of a centre of excellence.
Furthermore, the NRL has outlined a need for a redevelopment of HBF Park, proposing a budget exceeding AUD$200 million to transform the facility into a venue comparable to Sydney’s CommBank Stadium, the home ground for the Parramatta Eels.
WA Premier Roger Cook previously expressed dissatisfaction with the NRL’s handling of the situation, accusing the league of taking the state for granted.
However, Cook has since stepped up, presenting the AUD$50 million proposal that has helped broker a potential resolution and allowed the ARLC to move forward, pending the nod from the NRL clubs.
