Disney CEO Bob Iger gave audiences at Apple’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference a “sneak peek” into the media giant’s plan to use its new Vision Pro mixed-reality headset to transform the fan experience.
Iger said the company was developing new entertainment experiences for the platform, including a reimagined sports-viewing experience. According to the preview, viewers could switch between five different games at once with easy access to favorite teams and leagues, and toggle between multiple angles of action and detailed stats.
They could even watch in-depth replays of matches.
“You could do more than just watch sports,” Iger said. “You could be at the game without leaving your home or be part of the action like never before.”
Though it remains to be seen how much of this plan will be available when Vision Pro ships early next year, Iger’s offering shows Disney still sees sports as an integral part of its future — despite investor pressure to spin off ESPN in recent years.
And it’s sure to be a welcome opportunity for Disney’s sports partners — including the NBA, NHL, MLB, college football, and Formula 1 — to rethink how they engage fans.
The announcement also comes after Disney faced economic headwinds and announced thousands of job cuts in November 2022. “It’s clear that sports is an essential piece of the future of entertainment, and this technology has the potential to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” said Iger.[/vc_column_text]
