Amazon has secured a multi-year deal with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for exclusive global streaming rights to 16 regular season games per season, making it the first professional basketball league to stream live on Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon Prime will stream one game live each week, as well as the final of the new Commissioner’s Cup, an in-season tournament that features USD$500 000 (AUD$648 000) prize money.

Speaking on the deal, WNBA commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, said: “We’re grateful for Amazon’s support in increasing visibility and expanding access to our fans to more games on more devices, and we’re honoured to be the first professional basketball league streamed on Prime Video as part of a Prime membership.”

The deal is the first time Amazon has secured exclusive global streaming rights to a women’s professional sports league.

Amazon vice president of global sports video, Marie Donoghue, said: “The WNBA is one of the premier professional sports leagues in the world and serves as an inspiration to millions of young and aspiring athletes everywhere.”

“I am delighted we are bringing these outstanding athletes and games to Prime Video,” Donoghue said.

This deal continues Amazon’s foray into the sports industry having recently secured an 11-year deal with the National Football League as a media rights partner.
