Amazon Prime Video Secures Exclusive Broadcast Rights for ICC Events in Australia

Amazon Prime Video has gained exclusive broadcast rights for major International Cricket Council (ICC) events in Australia from 2024 to 2027. The deal encompasses a range of prestigious tournaments, including the Cricket World Cup, Twenty20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, under-19 competitions, and the World Test Championship Final. A total of 448 live games over four years will now be available to Prime Video subscribers.

The conclusion of an extensive tender process, initiated in September 2022 and restarted in January, sees Amazon Prime Video taking over from the previous rights holders, pay-tv corporation Foxtel, and the free-to-air Nine Network. The ICC’s latest agreement assures Australian fans exclusive access to all tournament fixtures at no extra cost for Prime members, with a monthly subscription priced at AU$9.99 ($6.64).

The deal marks a significant expansion of Amazon Prime Video’s live sports offerings in Australia. Previously known for cricket-based documentaries like “The Test,” the streaming service is now set to become the go-to platform for cricket enthusiasts to catch live action.

Geoff Allardice, CEO at the ICC, stated, “The recently concluded men’s Cricket World Cup has highlighted the interest and passion for ICC events across the globe, and especially in Australia where cricket fans have enjoyed the recent success of their men’s and women’s teams. We look forward to working with Prime Video Australia.”

The agreement covers a total of 14 events, including eight men’s and six women’s tournaments, kicking off with the Under-19 men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa early next year. The move further establishes Amazon Prime Video as a key player in the global sports broadcasting landscape, with existing agreements in India, the UK and Ireland, sub-Saharan Africa, and the US and Canada.

Hushidar Kharas, the head of Prime Video Australia and New Zealand, stated, “We are always looking for ways to deliver more value to our customers and live sports is consistently one of their top requests. We are thrilled to be able to offer our customers the live broadcast of the Cricket World Cup included in their Prime membership.”

As the streaming service steps into this new era of cricket broadcasting in Australia, cricket fans can anticipate an enhanced viewing experience, with exclusive access to ICC events through the convenience of Amazon Prime Video’s platform.
