ABC To Increase Coverage Of Women In Sport

The ABC has formalised a new partnership with Siren Sport to deliver more feminist content that challenges the current climate of the sports media.

The ABC signed off on the deal as it looks to advance its coverage of Australian women in sport.

As a non-for-profit woman in sport collective, Siren Sport is dedicated to elevating women’s voices, as well as marginalised groups.

Over the next year, ABC will support new voices through Siren’s Emerging Sports Writers Program, allowing them the opportunity to have their stories published on the ABC website.

Siren co-founder, Danielle Warby, said: “Together, we’re giving women in sport the visibility they deserve.”

“This partnership with ABC Sport empowers us to continue our work and connect with a broader audience, which is really exciting.

“ABC Sport is as passionate as we are to create pathways in sports media and we are excited to continue this work, together,” said Warby.

In December 2018, ABC created the 50:50 Equality Project, an initiative designed to address the under-representation of women’s voices in the public sphere.

When the Project began, male voices dominated the ABC network, with an overall female/male split of 70/30.

Now this year ABC has made the project a success, achieving a 51% target of female voices contributing to the network.

ABC sports editor, James Coventry, added: “We’ve made great strides in our coverage of women in sports over the past two years and this partnership with Siren will greatly complement that work.”

“Our audience can only benefit from the variety of perspectives that Siren’s writers will bring to our coverage,” Coventry said.

Siren said that their inbox is open to hearing story pitches, which are now able to be considered for both Siren and ABC Sport.
