The governance and operational framework for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 has been revealed with the appointment of Dame Therese Walsh as chair and Joel Morrison as chief executive officer.

The tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, represents a commercial and strategic milestone for cricket in the region, positioned as the largest cricket world cup ever staged in the southern hemisphere.

Dame Therese Walsh brings a formidable corporate pedigree to the Local Organising Committee. Currently serving as the chair of both Air New Zealand and ASB Bank, her appointment signals a move toward high-level commercial oversight and rigorous governance. Her experience is deeply rooted in major event delivery, having previously held the role of chair at TVNZ and served as a director of New Zealand Cricket.

In addition, Walsh was a central figure in the delivery of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015 and the 2011 Rugby World Cup, two of the most successful sporting events in New Zealand’s history.

Supporting the governance of the event is a board comprised of the executive leadership from both Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket. Joining them is independent director Peter Varghese AO, whose background as a senior Australian diplomat and former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade adds a layer of international strategic expertise. Varghese currently serves as the chancellor of The University of Queensland.

On the operational front, Joel Morrison has been appointed as CEO, moving from his current position as executive general manager of events and operations at Cricket Australia. Morrison has been instrumental in the commercial resurgence of international cricket in Australia since late 2022, overseeing a period defined by record-breaking attendance figures.

His career includes previous leadership stints as the CEO of Northern Territory Cricket and involvement in the 2014 T20 Champions League, ensuring the tournament is managed by a veteran of the sports business landscape.
