Rugby Australia has formalised announced cross-code coup, securing the signature of Sydney Roosters and Kangaroos star Angus Crichton on a two-year contract

The deal, announced on only today, 21 January 2026, will see the 29-year-old backrower depart the NRL at the conclusion of the 2026 season to join the NSW Waratahs and pursue a dream of representing the Wallabies at the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.

The agreement marks a “full circle” moment for the Temora-born athlete, who was a standout for The Scots College and the Australian Schoolboys in 2014 before pivotting to rugby league.

While Crichton has established himself as one of the premier second-rowers in the NRL, winning premierships, State of Origin shields, and international caps, reports suggest the Waratahs intend to deploy him as a midfield option. This transition mirrors the successful blueprints of previous converts such as Sonny Bill Williams and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii.

Commenting on his decision, Crichton, said: “I’ve always been open to the different path,” Crichton noted previously of a potential return to the 15-man code. “I haven’t played the sport in 10 years, so I’d be interested to see where I stack up.”
