Rugby Australia has announced three new appointments to its executive team as well as changes to its overseas selection policy.

Following a reportedly extensive selection process, Rugby Australia has announced new executives for the roles of chief performance officer (CPO), chief commercial officer (CCO) and chief marketing officer (CMO).

Previous World Rugby CMO, Marissa Pace, will join Rugby Australia as its new CMO.

Pace has over 15 years of experience in marketing, with a professional focus and in sports marketing.

During her career, Pace has been involved in many progressive initiatives that have driven equality and innovation within the brands she’s managed, a notable mention being her participation in gender neutralising World Rugby tournaments.

Rugby Australia will also see James Durbin join its team as CCO following his 20 years’ experience in the sport industry with his most recent position being CEO of Madison Sports Group in London.

Durbin commenced his career in rugby within Australia before moving to the UK to work in several high-level executive roles.

Finally, Peter Conde, former CEO of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), will take on the role of CPO following his resignation from AIS after Australia’s success in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Former elite sailor, Conde joins Rugby Australia after more than a decade working in elite sport.

Rugby Australia CEO, Andy Marinos, said he was excited to confirm the appointments to his executive team as the organisation embraces a new era.

“Marissa, James and Peter all join Rugby Australia with exceptional qualifications,” Marinos said.

They are industry leaders, and I am excited to work with them as we deliver a huge year for the game in 2022 and prepare for a number of significant, game defining moments over the coming years,” he said.

With reference to Rugby Australia’s game defining movements, the organisation announced in a statement changes to its overseas player selection policy for national teams.

The amended policy now allows the Wallabies, Wallaroos and Australian sevens teams to choose three players from oversees each tournament, series, or competition.

To be eligible for selection, the overseas player must have a minimum of 30 Test caps or have completed a minimum of five years’ service to Australian Rugby or be contractually committed to playing for an Australian-based franchise the following year.

In a press conference, Marinos said the amendment occurred to ensure Australia progresses forward into the upcoming World Cup and with the strongest players possible.

When asked if the ability for overseas players to qualify for Australian teams might diminish the domestic competition’s sustainability, Marinos confirmed allowing eligible overseas players to qualify for Australian rugby could encourage players to move internationally however Marinos said the policy will continue to prioritise players playing in Australia.

“A lot of talent and a lot of players that will take us through the World Cup are currently already contracted in Australia,” Marinos said.
