The opening game of the UEFA Women’s Euros 2022 saw a record total of 68,781 people, watch England beat Austria 1-0.
The attendance at Old Trafford is the highest in the history of the tournament, surpassing the 41,301 who went to the 2013 final in Sweden.
Commenting on the match’s atmosphere, England footballer, Leah Williamson, told the BBC: “It was pretty special, I had no idea what to expect, we embraced it really well.”
“It’s loud, communication becomes harder, at times it gets in the way but I’d take that any day.
“There was a great atmosphere,” she said.
On the attendance, England midfielder, Georgia Stanway, said: “The amount of people that turned up was amazing.”
“The occasion was massive,” she said.
England manager, Sarina Wiegman, added: “Incredible, there are no more words, it’s just unbelievable.”
“It was the ideal setting for the launch of Euro 2022 on a night that will be remembered for the occasion,” she said.
Additionally, UEFA was also named as an inaugural supporter of the UN’s latest “Football for the Goals” initiative, which aims to engage with football participants to improve equality, human rights and sustainability.
Attendance record comes after 91,553 people attended a Women’s Champions League match between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
