The resounding success of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament marked it as the most coveted sporting ticket of 2023, according to data provided by online ticket specialist Viagogo.

This revelation is indicative of a broader surge in demand for live events, showcasing the enduring appeal of sports on a global scale.

A significant highlight was the substantial 41 percent year-on-year increase in UK fans purchasing tickets for live events overseas. The surge not only underscores the eagerness of British sports enthusiasts to explore international events but also reflects a renewed post-pandemic appetite for live sports experiences.

Wimbledon emerged triumphant as the most sought-after sporting event for both UK and overseas fans. Tennis enthusiasts from 56 different countries secured tickets through Viagogo, emphasising the universal appeal of The Championships.

The British Grand Prix of Formula 1 experienced a notable ascent, jumping from the fourth position to claim the second spot in 2023. F1 demonstrated its widespread popularity, constituting half of the top 10 most-purchased tickets for overseas events among UK sports fans.

While the ICC World Test Championship between Australia and India missed securing a top-three position, cricket emerged as the leader in ticket sales on the Viagogo platform. This places cricket ahead of other sports like rugby, boxing, NFL and Formula 1, showcasing its global resonance.

“This year’s continued demand for tickets sold on Viagogo underscores the value fans place on live events,” said Cris Miller, Viagogo’s Global Managing Director.

“Dominant players and personalities, plus traditional rivalries, are driving interest and demand for teams and leagues, with fans more willing than ever to travel abroad to show their support.

“Viagogo exists to connect fans with live events in a safe and secure way and help ensure every seat is sold. 2023 has proven once again that there is huge value for rights holders who effectively utilise the secondary market, and, most importantly, for fans who are able to see the sports they love on their terms.”

All eyes are on the upcoming ‘Day of Reckoning’ boxing event scheduled for December 23 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Significantly, a substantial number of UK fans are expected to embark on the journey to the Middle East for the bout, where British heavyweight Anthony Joshua headlines the card against Sweden’s Otto Wallin.

This event serves as a compelling testament to the enduring global appeal of live sports experiences and the unwavering dedication of fans to support their favourite athletes and teams across international borders.
