Wellington Phoenix Unveil Alternate Strip Portfolio for 2026-27 A-League Campaign

image

The Wellington Phoenix have officially launched their alternate kit collection for the 2026-27 A-League season.

Shot on location at Wellington Airport, the departure hub for every away trip, the release spotlights two distinct strips that celebrate the beginning of the club’s journey on the road.

Both kits feature front-of-shirt commercial partnerships: Oppo sponsors the men’s alternate strips, while Entelar Group serves as front-of-shirt sponsor for the women’s team.

Kit Specifications & Design Details

  • Away Kit: A white base detailed with light grey patterning across the body, paying homage to the club’s change strips of the early 2010s. Signature Phoenix yellow features across the shoulders and shirt piping.

  • Men’s Styling: Paired with white shorts and white socks.
  • Women’s Styling: Paired with black shorts and white socks.
  • Third Kit (Kākāriki): A deep green color scheme inspired by the natural greenery and surrounding landscapes of the Wellington region. The jersey features a crisp white collar and sleeve cuffs, integrated with the club’s tohu across the body. Both teams will wear matching green shorts and green socks.

Cultural Significance of the Tohu

Both strips prominently feature the cultural tohu gifted to the club in 2022 on behalf of Te Āti Awa ki Te Whanganui a Tara by designer Charmaine Love. The design incorporates rich Māori symbolism:

  • Te Raukura: Centered on the front of the shirt, the white plume of feathers represents spiritual, physical, and communal harmony, honor, and unity, honoring the peaceful resistance of Parihaka ancestors in the 1880s.
  • Taniwha (Ngake & Whātaitai): Flanking the tohu, these legendary guardians of Wellington Harbour (Te Whanganui-a-Tara) represent mauri (life force) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
  • Koru & Waves: Surrounding fern elements (koru) represent new growth and peace, while wave patterns (ngaru) and hammerhead sharks (mangōpare) symbolize strength, leadership, and a fighting spirit.
  • Taranaki Maunga: Features sacred ancestral mountain motifs revered by mana whenua.

Competitive On-Pitch Debut

Both alternate kits will make their competitive debuts this weekend. The Phoenix men will wear the away kit on the road against the Newcastle Jets, while the Phoenix women will sport their new strip away to Perth Glory. Replica away and third kits are now available via official club retail channels.
