The inaugural season of the Unrivaled three-on-three women’s basketball league has shown promising results, averaging 221,000 viewers across its broadcasts on TNT Sports and TruTV.
The championship match, featuring Rose BC and Vinyl BC, attracted significant attention, averaging 364,000 viewers and peaking at 385,000, underscoring the competitive interest in women’s basketball.
Throughout the season, Unrivaled’s overall coverage reached an impressive audience of over 11.9 million viewers.
In addition to broadcast numbers, the league’s owned and earned media across league and club accounts, coupled with fan engagement, yielded a staggering 589.1 million social media impressions, with the aggregate social media audience surpassing 730,000, indicating robust digital interest in the league and its players.
Unrivaled’s merchandise sales have also made an impact, exceeding seven figures since launching in October 2024, while player compensation has totalled over USD$8.65 million (AUD$13.77 million), reflecting a rising investment in women’s sports.
Contextually, Micky Lawler, the commissioner of Unrivaled, highlighted that the league faced considerable competition for its domestic broadcast rights, which were ultimately secured by Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) for a reported USD$100 million (AUD$159 million) over six years.
During its first season, games aired on TNT on Monday and Friday evenings, with additional matches on TruTV on Saturdays, all available for streaming on Max, while WBD also played a crucial role in the league’s media strategy.
The debut broadcast’s average audience of 312,000 viewers not only positioned Unrivaled favourably but also marked a significant achievement in women’s sports media. Throughout the season, the league delivered the ten most-watched women’s basketball games ever on TNT Sports’ networks and the ten most-streamed games on Max.
The standout performance came from the 1-on-1 tournament finals, featuring Napheesa Collier and Aaliyah Edwards, which peaked at 398,000 viewers and averaged 377,000 viewers.
Looking ahead, Unrivaled has yet to announce its venue plans for the upcoming season as TNT executives have expressed interest in expanding the league to various U.S. cities by 2026, aiming to foster growth and engagement in new markets.
