The Australian Open Generated its Loudest Sports-Tech Headline from a Wristband.

In an opinion piece by Komal Raghavendra Kulkarni, he explains how the Australian Open revealed its sports-tech headline with a wristband.

During Carlos Alcaraz’s fourth-round win over Tommy Paul, an official spotted a WHOOP strap under his sweatband and told him to remove it. Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka were instructed similarly.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has approved WHOOP as Player Analysis Technology. The ATP and WTA have also permitted wearables at Tour events. But the Slams haven’t extended that approval. Tennis Australia said wearables “are currently not permitted at Grand Slams,” while noting discussions are ongoing.

That gap between Tour rules and Slam rules is where things get complicated for athletes and partners. Players are using biometrics as routine performance hygiene.

Brands are chasing the highest-value form of sponsorship which is real use and in the actual moment and not just signage. Slams want rules that are easy to enforce across hundreds of matches and they’re already supplying teams with external-load tracking via Bolt6.

WHOOP’s posture is exactly what you would expect from a brand which is trying to build product as infrastructure: “Data is not steroids, let the athletes measure their bodies.”

For brands, the takeaway is clear; a wearable can be permitted on the tours but prohibited at majors. Until tennis lands a single, consistent standard, these partnerships will keep losing their most valuable inventory which is on-court use at the events with the biggest audience.
