Super Rugby Trans-Tasman is set to be trialling virtual reality (VR) technology in order to better diagnose and manage concussions over the next five weeks.

World Rugby (WR), Rugby Australia (RA) and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) have joined forces to set up the trial with VR technology, known as NeuroFlex, which records horizontal and vertical movement of the eyes, as well as head movements.

Within a matter of seconds, the technology analyses data through a set of algorithms to generate a report which provides information for medical professionals, in order to take the next steps in managing concussions.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), RA chief medical officer, Warren McDonald, said this is a step forward for the game.

“This trial is another step in our continual quest to improve the assessment and management of concussion,” McDonald said.

“Eye tracking is a mode that has the potential to enhance the accuracy of our assessment.

“RA appreciates the enthusiastic support from all stakeholders in the implementation of this trial to benefit the welfare of players,” he said.

International rugby players head of player welfare, Conrad Smith, said: “This development has real potential and it’s great to see it rolled out in the Trans-Tasman competition.”

“It’s important that we use advances in technology to further our understanding of brain health and head injuries in our sport,” Smith told SMH.
