Star Sports Set for Cricket Australia Broadcast Rights

Indian broadcast company, Star Sports, a subsidiary of the Disney Star network, is set to acquire Cricket Australia’s (CA) broadcasting rights in a AUD$250 million deal, out bidding current rights holders, Sony.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the deal has been confirmed by sources close to CA, with the four-year deal still being finalised.

The new agreement gives Star Sports a tighter grip on cricket brodacsting rights, after they won the  Indian Premier League rights at the auction in June, after an estimated AUD$40 million shortfall in the six-year deal between Sony and CA’s AUD$150 million agreement made in 2017.

The news comes after Cricket Australia Chair, Lachlan Henderson,  director, Richard Freudenstein, and chief executive, Nick Hockley, went to India in late-May to meet with Sony, Viacom and Disney Star.

Star Sports boasts a global cricket broadcasting portfolio, including The Ashes, India’s international matches, T20 world cup and the Border Gavaskar Trophy to Indian audiences.

An Announcement from Cricket Australia has not been made yet, as the organisation continues to work through a legal dispute with Seven West Media.
