The Perth Lynx have announced the formation of the Rio Tinto Perth Lynx Academy, a high-performance initiative designed to transition emerging talent into the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

The program focuses on introducing athletes to professional systems, playing styles, and standards within a structured development environment.

The academy is ensures a consistent pipeline of Western Australian talent that is physically and mentally prepared for the rigours of professional basketball.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore vice president of the people, Matthew Kimball, stated that the partnership is proud to create meaningful opportunities for talented athletes across Western Australia.

Perth Lynx general manager, Chris Earl, emphasised that the academy is a critical step in setting clear standards for what it takes to perform at the elite level.

“The Rio Tinto Perth Lynx Academy is about setting a clear standard and preparing athletes for what it truly takes to perform at WNBL level,” Earl said.

Elite Coaching Leadership

The academy will be spearheaded by two-time Olympian and club legend Melissa Marsh, who serves as head coach.

Marsh’s appointment brings unparalleled experience to the program:

  • Playing Pedigree: She competed in 14 WNBL seasons, amassing 266 games with the Perth Lynx/West Coast Waves.
  • Club Honour: Marsh is one of the few athletes to have her jersey (#14) retired by the organisation.
  • Performance Insight: Since retiring in 2014, Marsh has transitioned into coaching, utilizing her deep understanding of the Lynx environment to lead the academy’s development framework.

Joining Marsh is assistant coach, Caleb Nash, a former NBL1 athlete and clinic coach who provides contemporary playing insights and technical skill development support.

Comprehensive Development Framework

The Rio Tinto Perth Lynx Academy offers a holistic approach to athlete preparation, moving beyond standard on-court training. Weekly sessions will be held in a professional setting focused on WNBL playing systems and individual skill growth. Athletes will also receive specialised instruction in strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology, and recovery. Dedicated modules on fitness testing and injury mitigation will also be ensured by the program for long-term athletic durability.

Further announcements regarding the inaugural playing group are expected to be released later this week.
