Real Madrid Lose Court Battle To La Liga

A Madrid court has dismissed a legal claim by Real Madrid ruling in favour of La Liga after Real Madrid challenged the Spanish soccer body to commercialise the league’s broadcast rights.

In the legal claim, Real Madrid asked the court to enforce La Liga to provide financial details from the 2018/19 season and to reverse agreements approved by La Liga in 2019.

Real Madrid also claimed that they were due a payment of €23.9 million (AUD$37 Million) by La Liga but the court ruling dismissed all claims, ruling in favour of La Liga.

In a statement, La Liga said the decision revalidated the organisations powers and that the ruling “is of great importance”, highlighting the role that “La Liga has in the commercial management of audiovisual rights and the obligation that this entails to guarantee optimal management and investment”.

La Liga currently share its broadcast revenue with collective selling of broadcast rights as opposed to individual selling and last year it became the first European football league to broadcast games with streaming platform Twitch.

This is another setback for Real Madrid after the collapse of the Super League earlier this year which Real Madrid was heavily associated with and were also eliminated from the Champion’s League after a 3-1 aggregate loss to Chelsea, missing out on the final.

The team however is still a chance to win the La Liga title as they are currently two points behind league leader Atletico Madrid, tied second with Barcelona at 75 league points.
