Queensland Rugby Union Seeks New Board Talent with Commercial and Digital Expertise

image

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) has opened expressions of interest for a casual vacancy on its Board, seeking individuals with specific professional skills to contribute to the strategic direction of the not-for-profit governing body.

The move highlights a concerted effort by the QRU to enhance its governance and operational effectiveness through targeted expertise.

The QRU, responsible for the development of Rugby Union across Queensland, oversees a vast network of over 70,000 players, 240 clubs, and 450 schools, alongside a contingent of officials and volunteers.

In addition, female participation in rugby is experiencing rapid growth in the state, with over 16,000 registered female players.

This growth area presents both opportunities and challenges for the Board in terms of resource allocation, infrastructure, and commercialisation.

The voluntary Board positions are seeking candidates who can bring expertise in at least one of three key areas:

  • People & Culture / best practice Human Resource Management: Essential for managing a diverse workforce that includes professional players (Queensland Reds in Super Rugby and Super W), extensive volunteer networks, and administrative staff. This focus suggests an emphasis on talent development, retention, and fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Commercial / Marketing & Branding: Vital for a sporting organisation that relies on sponsorship, broadcast rights, and fan engagement for financial sustainability. Strong commercial judgement is crucial for diversifying revenue streams and capitalising on the growing popularity of rugby, particularly women’s rugby.
  • Technology & IT / Digital Innovation: Increasingly important for modern sports organisations in areas such as digital fan engagement, data analytics, operational efficiency, and content distribution. This expertise is critical for optimising the QRU’s reach and enhancing the fan and participant experience.

Beyond specific skills, the QRU is also prioritising attributes that reflect the diversity of its membership, specifically encouraging applications from individuals representing Regional, Rural, or Remote areas, women, and culturally diverse communities.

QRU company secretary, As Mr. Graham Maher, facilitates inquiries, the recruitment process will be overseen by the QRU nominations committee, comprising both directors and elected member representatives.

While the successful candidate will be appointed to this casual vacancy by the board, they will be required to stand for election at the QRU Annual General Meeting in March 2026, where members will vote to affirm the appointment.
