North Queensland Cowboys Open New High-Performance Training Centre

The North Queensland Cowboys have officially opened their new $40 million community, training and high-performance centre in Townsville.

Funding for the centre was secured through an $15 million grant from the federal government, a $5 million grant from the Queensland government, and a $20 million loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility.

As part of the agreement with Football Queensland, the Cowboys will share the facilities with Football Queensland North, the North Queensland Gold Stars, and James Cook University.

Federal minister for resources, water and Northern Australia, Kevin Pitt, said he was “delighted to help celebrate the opening of the centre.”

“Sport is an important part of Australian culture and is a crucial contributor to our communities, particularly in regional Australia,” Pitt said.

“This new centre will be an important facility for communities across north Queensland,” he said.

Queensland minister for sport, Stirling Hinchcliffe, said that there is a growing demand among national and international sporting squads for access to “quality, high performance training facilities” and also hopes it strengthens Queensland’s bid for the 2032 Olympic Games.

“It makes Townsville an attractive option for pre-Games training for competitors not only preparing for a possible 2032 Queensland Olympics, but also Paris in 2024 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” Hinchcliffe said.

The facility includes an indoor multi-use synthetic turf training field that can be converted into a hard-court sports floor, a basketball court, a gym, three swimming pools and various medical sports consulting and rehabilitation services.
