In a deal that would see Amazon Prime Video stream “a significant number of games”, the NFL is closing in on an exclusive broadcast deal to show Thursday night football games after the 2021-22 season.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the NFL could potentially carry many games exclusively on Prime Video, who currently pay USD$75 million (AUD$97 million) in a non-exclusive contract, shared with Fox and the NFL Network.

Under the new deal, which reportedly would cost USD$1 billion (AUD$1.29 billion) per season, Thursday night games would not be made available on broadcast services, in what would be the biggest contract Amazon Prime Video have signed in their sports streaming history.

This report follows news of Disney nearing agreement to a USD$2.6 billion (AUD$3.35 billion) broadcast deal to show Monday night games, which would be televised on the Disney owned ESPN, and would commence after the 2021-22 season.

Amazon Prime Video and Disney are constantly going head-to-head in the battle to gain prosperity in the ever-growing online streaming service world.

The WSJ reports current deals between the NFL and broadcast networks are likely to run for as long as 11 years for the Sunday and Monday franchises, paving the way for two streaming services to own the rights to their own night of fixtures.

Amazon Prime Video are currently covering a variety of sports leagues globally, including: LaLiga football in Spain, ATP tennis, and even in Australia, with a recent two-year broadcast deal with Swimming Australia.
