The recent Netball World Cup 2023 hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, has been nominated for the ‘Best Sporting Event of the Year 2023’ at the Sports Business Awards. This is an annual international event that recognise and reward behind-the-scenes efforts that facilitate sporting excellence and endeavours.

The Sports Business Awards are to be held in London in November later this year.

With the World Cup being held on African soil for the first time in history, they have well and truly proved they are capable of hosting some of the World’s biggest sporting events and their commitment to the growth of the sport.

Sponsorship revenue was doubled compared to the 2019 Netball World Cup, rights to broadcasting live matches were sold internationally to major netball nations and all fans were able to watch games on World Netball’s NetballPass platform making it one of the most successful commercial program that NWC has ever seen.

Australia took out the final against England with a strong 61-45 lead, claiming their 12th crown and retaining World No.1 status.

This nomination has proven, once again, the strength of women in sport and calls for further recognition and support for the future. The development and funding of grassroots programs are vital to increasing the participation rates of women in sports and creating a roadmap to increase equality within our sporting world.

The success of Australia’s female teams on the global stage in recent times, with the Diamonds’ victory at the World Cup as well as the Matildas’ semi-final appearance at the FIFA World Cup, has sparked a game-changing response. With the government’s recent announcement pledging $200 million into women’s sporting facilities and equipment, this is just the beginning of what is an exciting time for women in sport.
