Netball Australia has announced a new First Nations Tournament, aimed at providing greater opportunity for First Nations players.
Across three days, the pilot tournament will showcase under-23 teams from each state and territory at the State Netball Centre in Melbourne from September 13-15, 2024.
Stacey West, Netball Australia’s CEO, emphasised the impact of this inaugural event, stating, “The 2024 pilot First Nations Tournament serves as the foundation for a nationwide First Nations netball league. It will pave the way for Netball Australia and its Member Organisations to shape a sustainable future for First Nations involvement in our beloved sport.”
The primary goal of the First Nations Tournament, a collaborative effort between Netball Australia and its eight Member Organisations, aims to enrich the cultural awareness of non-Indigenous individuals within the netball community. Additionally, it seeks to empower and celebrate the achievements of First Nations people at every level of the game.
The tournament will also feature First Nations coaches, umpires, and officials from various regions, underscoring the immense pool of talent within the netball fraternity. Event partners include Suncorp, the Confident Girls Foundation, and Visit Victoria.
The announcement follows a series of national First Nations initiatives launched earlier this year, including a pioneering First Nations Coaching Course and the introduction of Netball Australia’s First Nations Invitational Netball Team, the Black Swans, during the 2024 Pacific Netball Series.
Ali Tucker-Munro, Netball Australia’s First Nations Engagement Lead, expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament, remarking, “I eagerly anticipate witnessing the prowess of our athletes and connecting with individuals nationwide who share my profound passion for the sport. The initiation of this First Nations Tournament underscores the collective commitment of Netball Australia and its Member Organisations towards fostering an inclusive and secure environment for First Nations Australians, while nurturing the abundant talent that thrives within our communities.”
Tucker-Munro also extended gratitude to the partners involved, acknowledging their profound dedication to supporting initiatives that create tailored opportunities for resilient First Nations women and girls.
Notably, the 2024 First Nations Tournament will welcome patrons free of charge, promising an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
