The National Basketball Association (NBA) Foundation has received a record US$1 million (AU$1.47 million) donation from Google Pixel.
Official NBA phone partner, Google Pixel, has pledged the biggest ever contribution from an NBA partner, on the tenth anniversary of ‘giving Tuesday’.
The donation is allocated to the NBA’s fellowship program for historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).
Focusing on giving black youths more opportunities in the sport and media industry, the fellowship program includes a 10-week internship with an NBA team in its various departments.
Commenting on the partnership, NBA Foundation executive director, Greg Taylor, said: “we hope that the Fellowship program, with the help of partners like Google, serves to provide young people the skill development and network needed to pursue meaningful careers whether in sports, technology, or other industries.”
Since its inception in 2020, the foundation has raised over US$53 million (AU$78 million) and will continue in its broader mission of ‘investing in school-to-career workforce development.’
On the fellowship program, Taylor, said: “Our mission at the NBA Foundation is to increase economic opportunity and career advancement for Black youth and the NBA HBCU Fellowship program is a tangible example of the types of access to opportunity and workforce development programming we support.”
