MLB Expands Partnership With Google

Major League Baseball (MLB) and its subsidiaries, including MLB TV, have broadened their partnership with Google Cloud, which began in 2020.

Under the deal, the MLB will have access to Google Cloud products, which provide a variety of uses, including media production and delivery, and targeted marketing.

Google’s new product, Media CDN, will be test run by the MLB as part of the agreement.

Media CDN uses similar technology to YouTube to efficiently transfer large video files and enhance video quality, bringing superior experiences to fans in their own home.

The MLB has set out three goals for the partnership:

  • Looking to increase fan engagement through better video content
  • More efficient supply chain
  • Increased media personalisation.

Discussing the expanded union, commissioner of baseball, Robert D. Manfred Jr., said: “Google Cloud has been an outstanding partner to baseball, helping us innovate platforms that provide our fans with exceptional real-time experiences.”

“With their leading expertise in everything from data analytics to machine learning, this partnership provides us with an unmatched extension of technological resources.

“Now we can continue collaborating with Google Cloud as a means of further delivering unparalleled digital experiences for our fans,” he said.

Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian, added: “Major League Baseball has been a clear leader in digital media for decades, bringing unforgettable moments to homes, offices, and fans across the world for the last 20 years.”

“We look forward to starting the next chapter of our partnership with the league to further advance its media offerings for years to come by using our data-driven capabilities, AI and ML, and secure global infrastructure,” he said.

These technological capabilities complement the MLB’s streaming deal with Youtube.
