Mexico Launches Bid To Host Olympic Games

Mexico has launched a bid to become the host of the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, said a joint statement released by the country’s foreign ministry and nation’s Olympic committee (COM), a move that would see the games head to the nation for the second time following the 1968 Mexico City games.

Mexico foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard spoke with Reuters following the announcement and assured that with 15 years before to Games would arrive, there is enough time to organise them.

Further commenting on the announcement, Ebrard said: “We see ourselves as a successful and ambitious country.”

“We are the only country that will host three FIFA World Cups, we are a vigorous country with one of the best economies in the world.

“We will initiate the studies requested by the IOC to take into account the changes that have taken place in the Olympic Games financing … there is no bond to be paid in the process,” he said.

Concerns were raised by Olympic athletics medallist and director of Mexico’s National Sports Commission, Ana Gabriela Guevara, about the economic feasibility of hosting the event.

However, Ebrard responded by saying the financing system for Olympics had changed and the government would only need to contribute 10%.

Ebrard would continue: “The Olympics should fit the city, not the other way around, not build and then not use the facilities.”

No host city has been announced yet, however three Mexican cities will receive major event experience, with Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey all hosting matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico would receive the Olympic flag from Brisbane 2032, following games in Paris and LA during the preceding decade, should Mexico win the bidding, it will be the first time Europe has gone three games without hosting the event.
