In a compelling address at the Global Disability Summit held in Berlin, Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has urged governments and authorities worldwide to channel greater investments into accessible infrastructure aimed at advancing the global development of Para-sport.

Parsons underscored the transformative power of Para-sport, suggesting that it serves as a catalyst for increased inclusion for the estimated 1.3 billion individuals living with disabilities.

He also pledged the IPC’s commitment to provide Para-sport development support across 150 countries by 2029, thereby enhancing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in sports and physical activities.

Stating in his advocacy, president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Andrew Parsons, said: “Our vision at the IPC is one where every individual with a disability has the opportunity to participate in Para-sport, whether for recreation or competition,”

“Achieving this requires accessible infrastructure and equipment that facilitate participation.

“Greater access leads to increased inclusion across all facets of society. Sport diminishes the stigma and discrimination often associated with disability, empowers individuals, alters societal attitudes, promotes mobility, and cultivates inclusive communities.

“These outcomes can ultimately contribute to improved employment prospects, health outcomes, and stronger economies,” Parsons stated.

While praising the recent Paralympic Games in Paris, Parson characterised them as “the most spectacular and impactful” in history, with over EUR€1.5 billion (AUD$2.77 billion) allocated by the French government for disability inclusion initiatives.

The third edition of the summit, co-hosted by the International Disability Alliance, the Government of Germany, and the Government of Jordan, took place in Berlin from April 2 to 3, uniting stakeholders in a shared vision for disability-inclusive development and humanitarian action.
