IOC Support Brisbane 2032 Olympics Bid Ahead Of Vote

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board has proposed Brisbane as the host of the 2032 Summer Olympic Games ahead of the IOC session before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Reports have suggested Brisbane has been the frontrunner to become the host in the IOC’s perspective due to a new selection process where there are no official candidate cities campaigning against each other.

IOC president, Thomas Bach, said the decision was now in the hands of the voting IOC members come 21 July when the session is scheduled.

“This commission looked in depth at all aspects of Brisbane 2032; the master venue plan, sustainability, feasibility and legacy and highlighting the impressive public support as well as the strong support across the entire political spectrum in Australia,” Bach said.

“All this together I think made it somehow irresistible for the commission as well as for the executive board today,” he said.

On the strength of the bid, chair of the future host commission for the games of the Olympiad, Kristin Kloster Aasen, said: “The project centres on delivering the best possible conditions for sport and the athletes in a sport loving country with proven experience in hosting successful major sports events such as the Commonwealth Games in 2018.”

“The commission is satisfied that the guarantees provided by Brisbane 2032 are comprehensive and thorough.

“They demonstrate a strong support by all three levels of government and address all relevant matters,” she said.

Brisbane’s bid includes proposing Albion Precinct to host athletics and basketball, South Bank Cultural Forecourt for archery, BCEC for table tennis, badminton, fencing, and taekwondo, and South Bank Piazza for basketball 3×3.

The bid has also been strengthened by the Federal Government’s, who have pledged to match half the cost of the 2032 Olympic Games which includes a $1 billion redevelopment of Queensland stadium, The Gabba.

If successful, it would be the first time Brisbane hosted the Olympics and the third time Australia has hosted an Olympics with the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

The IOC is expected to announce Brisbane as the 2032 Olympics host during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if the bid is successfully voted by the IOC members.
