Hannah Green Becomes Australia’s Latest Sports Women To Conquer The World

Hannah Green has become just the third woman in Australian history to have won a major golf championship, after winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship outside Minneapolis today.

The 22-year-old clinched her maiden victory at Hazeltine National Golf Club, shooting 68-69-70-72 to earn a cheque for $US 577,000, and giving herself an exemption to play on the main tour for two years.

The win also gives the Perth local a chance to represent Australia at the Olympics in Tokyo next year.

“I mean, I’m pretty much speechless,” Green said.

“I was really nervous playing that last five holes, and I’m happy I made a clutch putt.

“It’s awesome, I’ve always wanted to win in front of an Aussie crowd, but it felt like even though I’m not in Australia, that was what it was like today,” she said.

“And even just to be winning a major as my first event, I’m just over the moon.’’

Green paid tribute to the mentoring of Seven-time major winner Karrie Webb, whose scholarship she won in 2015.

“Getting to know Karrie, staying in a house with her and watching everything she [did] in a major tournament gave me a big insight into what it was like,” Green said.

Webb was standing on the 18th supporting Green as she made the final putt.

“I start choking up thinking about how much winning this event would change her life and how proud I was of her,” an emotional Webb said.

“That was world class; the way she closed out that tournament.”

In only her second full year on the LPGA Tour, Green is also the first wire-to-wire winner of the Women’s PGA since 2011.
