Formula One (F1) and Moto GP have both made tweaks to current and future race calendars ahead of the start of their respective 2021 seasons.

After initially being dropped from the F1 calendar this year, Portimao has now been confirmed as the third track this season.

The Portuguese track was used last year when the coronavirus outbreak forced organisers to race at primarily-European tracks, in a logistical and health decision.

Formula One returned to Portimao last year for the first time in 25 years.

Race promoters and the Portuguese government are currently working through attendance options, with 27,000 fans attending the Grand Prix last season.

Formula One’s chief executive, Stefano Domenicali, said F1 is eager to visit Portugal again, and is confident for the season ahead.

“We are confident and excited about our 2021 season, having shown last year that we could deliver 17 races safely and bring our millions of fans thrilling racing at a difficult time,” Domenicali said.

We hope to welcome fans to Portimao again this season in a safe way and are working with the promoter on the details of that plan.

Meanwhile, Moto GP has announced they will add a race in Hungary to the calendar from 2023.

The race will be held at a brand new circuit, with construction in Debrecen to commence in the coming months.

Dorna Sports chief executive, Carmelo Ezpeleta said Hungary is an ideal location for racing.

“Finally, this is coming true, we’re very happy because in Hungary there is a lot of passion for the sport,” Ezpeleta said.

“Gábor (Talmácsi) was a world champion and with this project many more Hungarian people will start coming into our talent cups and in our paddock.

“Our wish is to bring the best for the circuit – spectators, economic impact, give coverage of this region around the world on TV – but also to have the possibility of more Hungarian riders in future through the Road to MotoGP,” he said.

Moto GP’s pre-season testing is currently taking place in Qatar ahead of the new season, with F1 manufacturers to start testing in Bahrain in a week’s time.

The 2021 Moto GP season will begin on March 28, the same date as the F1 season commences.
