fter shelving the plans for a 17th team at the beginning of the year due to the current pandemic until 2024, The NRL is currently preparing to announce that the competition is expanding for the first time in 14 years.

Brisbane is to be granted a second team as Queensland is expected to be awarded the fourth team from 2023.

Once confirmed, it will be the first time a team has been added to the competition since the Gold Coast Titans joined in 2007.

The announcement follows an Australian Rugby League commissions (ARLC) board meeting where the expansion of the competition to 17 clubs is pending approval from the current 16 teams.

The league is expected to have further talks with bidding clubs Brisbane Firehawks, Jets and Redcliff Dolphins to grant a licence in September.

The Dolphins are considered the first pick to be added to the NRL after impressing the ARLC in meetings last month.

This announcement will allow the winning club a singing session with off-contract players from November 1 to build a team and roster for the 2023 season.

Expanding the competition has been a plan for the ARLC as Chairman Peter V’Landys wants to advance the rugby league in Brisbane.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman, Peter V’Landys, said: “If we bring in a 17th team, it’s got to bring in new audiences and take a casual fan and turn them onto a rusted-on rugby league fan,” he told 2GB.

“There’s no good taking fans from the Broncos or Titans and Dragons, they have got to be new fans, with new tribalism and they’ve got to reinvigorate Brisbane rugby league and that’s what we are looking at.

Official announcement could be set to be made after the National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final on Sunday, October 3… we will wait and see.
