Disney-owned ESPN will broadcast the 2021 NRL season across the African continent after finalising a broadcast partnership with the NRL.
NRL CEO, Andrew Abdo, said the partnership will help expand the league’s television footprint and spread the game of rugby league throughout Africa.
“Rugby League is exceptional football entertainment, high speed, high ball in play time and features some of the best athletes in the world,” Abdo said.
“We can’t wait to see the NRL on television screens throughout Africa.
“I’ve got no doubt audiences will love the additional pace and athleticism showcased by our players.
“Rugby Union players have successfully transitioned to rugby league in the past and airing the NRL in Africa may also inspire athletes and fans alike,” he said.
The Walt Disney Company Africa director of sports commercial and business, Kyle de Klerk, said: “We are thrilled to have acquired the rights of the National Rugby League, expanding our commitment to bringing premier content to audiences and growing the diversity of programming on ESPN.”
The Walt Disney Company Africa vice president of media networks, Evert van der Veer, said: “No strangers to incredible rugby action, we look forward to bringing a jam-packed schedule of incredible action from one of the greatest rugby tournaments in the world to viewers across continent.”
