ays after the postponement of Australia’s three-test series in South Africa, it has been revealed that Cricket Australia (CA) had their offer for a home series turned down by the Proteas’ board.

Speaking with the ABC, CA interim chief executive, Nick Hockely, said he understood why Cricket South Africa (CSA) declined touring Australia

“CSA made that very clear that they have got lots of other commitments and with quarantine periods and the like, that just wasn’t feasible,” Hockley said.

“I don’t think CSA could have done any more… in terms of biosecurity arrangements,” he said.

CA flagged the potential series as too much of a risk to player safety, rather than a financial decision to cancel the tour.

South Africa are currently grappling a second wave of COVID-19, and are also battling the more intense strain of the virus with many unknowns surrounding it.

By missing the series, it hinders Australia’s chances of playing in the world Test championship.

With the South African tour cancelled, the next international tour is with the T20 squad, which commences a five-match series in New Zealand later this month.

Coach Justin Langer will not travel across the Tasman, with the team taken over in this series by assistant coach Andrew McDonald.

All 19 players originally selected for the T20 squad will remain, with no test players being considered for the tour.
