Hockey in Australia has recently announced a AUD$1.5 million investment from the Australian Government, the investment aims to bolster the growth of hockey in Canberra.

This significant funding initiative follows previous investments in Queensland and Western Australia, further emphasising the government’s commitment to elevating hockey standards nationwide.

Commenting on the announcement, Hockey Australia CEO, David Pryles, said: “This substantial investment marks another major win for hockey in Australia and delivers a much-needed boost to the sport in Canberra.”

“It’s incredibly exciting to see the return of another world-class international hockey venue on home soil.

“This investment not only strengthens Australia’s presence on the global stage but also ensures a lasting legacy for our sport, enhancing our Player Pathway and stimulating community engagement,” Pryles said.

CEO of Hockey ACT, Rob Sheekey, added: “The Carter Field is the premier hockey surface in Canberra, and this announcement ensures that the Canberra Chill, future Australian athletes, and the ACT community have access to a top-tier facility,” Sheekey said.

Minister for Finance, Senator, the Hon Katy Gallagher, remarked: “The whole federal Labor team is out batting for Canberra every day, and this is another great outcome for our city to support local sport and local athletes,” she said.

Member for Canberra, Alicia Payne, also commented on the importance of the National Hockey Centre’s safety and its main purpose, thanking the Albanese Labor Government support in her advocacy for the investment to happen.

The allocated funds will primarily benefit Carter Field at the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham, ensuring it remains a premier venue for both community engagements and elite competitions, the carter field is scheduled for a substantial upgrade that will re-establish its status as a viable host for international events.

The upgrades include the installation of a new International Category One playing surface, identical to that used in the 2024 Paris Olympics, alongside enhancements to irrigation systems, fencing, and other essential infrastructure.

Notably, the new pitch will yield a 45% reduction in water usage, while also supporting over 10,000 community fixtures and training sessions in the next ten years.

This investment represents a significant boost for hockey in Canberra and reinforces the government’s focus on enhancing local sporting infrastructure to benefit future generations of athletes.
