Sports Advisory Partners Australia (SAPA) has announced a new leadership expansion with the appointment of former AFL chief executive, Andrew Demetriou, as the independent chair of its Board.
The announcement marks a move by the full-service advisory firm to bolster its governance and commercial influence across the Australia and New Zealand sporting landscape.
Demetriou, who led the AFL from 2003 to 2014, is widely credited with looking over the league’s most transformative era of national expansion and commercial growth.
Since his departure from the AFL, he has held senior roles at Capitol Health and the Australian Multicultural Advisory Council, bringing a wealth of cross-sectoral wisdom to SAPA’s multi-disciplinary team.
Commenting on the leadership announcement, co-executive director of SAPA, Ian Prendergast, said: “Andrew’s leadership and vision have helped shape the modern Australian sporting landscape.”
“His experience and networks will further strengthen our ability to deliver sustainable growth, innovation, and positive change for our clients,” Prendergast said.
The appointment arrives as sporting organisations face increasingly complex regulatory and commercial demands.
SAPA, a registered legal practice, specialises in bridging the gap between high-level strategy and practical execution.
Demetriou’s tenure at the AFL, which saw the introduction of the Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants, provides the organisation with unparalleled expertise in competition expansion and infrastructure planning.
SAPA’s core pillars, covering legal, integrity, and athlete wellbeing, will be amplified by Demetriou’s background in managing large-scale stakeholder networks and billion-dollar broadcast rights negotiations.
Co-executive director, Sam Chadwick, noted that Demetriou has already been working with the firm in a consultancy capacity, and his transition to Chair provides “invaluable counsel” for the firm’s next phase of growth.
SAPA’s mission is to provide “game-changing results” for professional clubs, National Sporting Organisations (NSOs), and individual athletes.
The firm has already established a presence in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Hobart, positioning itself as a key advisor ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
“The organisation is playing an important role in supporting sporting organisations and brands to navigate a rapidly changing landscape,”
“SAPA has established an impressive team with deep industry experience… I look forward to contributing to the next phase of growth,” Demetriou stated.
The organisation expects to announce several new major client partnerships in the first quarter of 2026, making use of the credibility and experience Demetriou brings to the boardroom.
