Amazon Prime Renews Exclusive UCL Rights Package

Amazon Prime Video has announced a partnership extension with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League (UCL), retaining their top pick Wednesday night UCL rights package in Italy until 2027.

Amazon’s renewal offer is reportedly worth between EUR€100 million (AUD$154.51 million) and EUR€110 million (AUD$169.96 million) per year.

The partnership sustains Amazon Prime Video’s portfolio of Champions League rights across Europe, after securing the league’s split UK broadcast rights last year.

Commenting on the extension, Prime Video Europe managing director, Alex Green, said: “Millions of Prime members in Italy have enjoyed our coverage of the headline Wednesday match and we couldn’t be happier with how they have responded to the broadcast.”

“This is the most prestigious competition in European club football and we will continue to invest and innovate to provide the highest quality experience for our customers,” he said.

The current coverage of the UCL in Italy is split between the country’s dominant broadcaster, Sky Italia, and Amazon.

Sky is also set to follow Amazon in retaining its UEFA rights for the next cycle, which would extend to the vast majority of UCL fixtures across the next three seasons.

The 2024-25 season will see Amazon cover 18 live matches of a newly formatted Champions League, featuring 36 teams.

This news comes after the UEFA Champions League announced a sponsorship with Mastercard to deliver an exclusive fan experience with Messi.
