AFL Uses Google Partnership To Engage Fans

Google Australia has partnered with AFL for the 2019 season to introduce three new voting categories via Google Search.

The voting categories allow fans to vote on the Friday Night Best on Ground and Player of the Round for the remainder of the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, and the end of season Fan Awards.

Round 15 will see the commencement of the Best on Ground category where fans will be able to vote with Google for their top player in each Friday night match for the rest of the home and away season, and throughout the Finals Series.

Fans will also be able to vote for Player of the Round from four nominees announced on Monday, following the conclusion of weekend games during the home and away season.

The weekly Best on Ground player winner will be announced on Friday night, while the winner of the Player of the Round will be released each Wednesday, via official AFL social media channels and through AFL.com.au.

AFL General Manager Commercial, Kylie Rogers, said the new partnership was an exciting opportunity for fans to have their say and vote for their best players each week.

“The AFL is excited to partner with Google,” Ms Rogers said.

“Google’s ability to connect and engage with millions of people around the world will help bring the game of AFL to new audiences as well as our avid fans.

“Whether you’re cheering for your club at the game or from the comfort of your couch, all fans can get involved and cast their vote in an exciting new way.”

Google Australia and New Zealand Director of Marketing, Aisling Finch, said the new partnership would allow more users to get closer to the action.

“We know Aussies love sport, and come to Search to follow teams, scores, news and ladders,” Ms Finch said.

“We’re delighted to team up with the AFL to bring Aussies a new way to get into the action and vote for their favourite players.”
