AFL Tasmania to launch Senior Talent Academy in 2025

image

AFL Tasmania is taking significant steps to ensure the financial sustainability and competitive strength of the Tasmania Devils as they prepare to join the AFL and AFLW competitions in 2028. Central to this strategy is the recently announced Senior Talent Academy program, set to launch in 2025. This initiative aims to elevate local football talent and create a robust pathway for aspiring players.

The Senior Talent Academy, operating in the South, North, and North-West regions, will provide targeted training and development for men’s and women’s footballers. In collaboration with the state’s AFL/W club, this program will equip players with the skills and experience necessary to compete in the Victorian Football League men’s (VFL) and women’s (VFLW) competitions, with entry planned for 2026.

This academy builds on the success of the 2024 representative program, offering expanded opportunities and increased visibility for Tasmanian players. An expanded game calendar will feature up to six matches for senior footballers in 2025, giving local talent a platform to showcase their abilities.

Training groups established in all three regions will enable players to participate in state representative fixtures against competitive teams, including VFL and VFLW sides. Importantly, players will maintain their affiliations with local Premier League clubs, ensuring continued community engagement and support.

The strategic focus on preparing local talent for the VFL and VFLW is a crucial step in Tasmania’s journey towards joining the AFL and AFLW. AFL Tasmania, in partnership with key stakeholders, recognizes the VFL and VFLW as essential components in developing a strong player pipeline from grassroots to elite levels.

As Tasmania transitions to a new community football model in 2025, the final year of the Tasmanian State League (TSL) will give way to premier league competitions in each region. This restructuring aims to streamline talent development, culminating in the establishment of the Senior Talent Academy.

In addition to player development, AFL Tasmania is enhancing umpiring pathways to ensure high-quality officiating at all levels. Investing in umpire development will support the overall standard of the game and ensure consistent, fair play across regional and state competitions.

The Senior Talent Academy program, overseen by AFL Tasmania’s talent department and State Talent Manager Dave O’Sign, reflects a collaborative effort with the Tasmania Football Club. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to advancing Tasmanian football and preparing for the Devils’ successful entry into the AFL and AFLW.

By focusing on developing local talent and strengthening football infrastructure, AFL Tasmania aims to ensure the financial longevity and competitive standard of the Tasmania Devils. This comprehensive approach will not only elevate the quality of football in the state but also secure a sustainable and competitive future for the team on the national stage.
