Adelaide 36ers Back Refugee Christmas Appeal via Harmony Hoops Program

The Adelaide 36ers have activated a community drive, backing the Australian Refugee Association’s (ARA) Christmas Appeal, using their established community relationship to generate critical public support and funding for newly settled families.

This campaign leverages the club’s recently launched Harmony Hoops program, a state government-backed initiative delivered in partnership with the ARA to foster social cohesion through basketball.

The commercial and strategic value for the NBL organisation lies in reinforcing its community-first identity while amplifying the reach of its existing social program.

Harmony Hoops, which received funding under the Active State Collaboration Program (ASCP), targets culturally diverse young people, refugees, and migrants facing social isolation.

By linking the Christmas Appeal to this recognisable community program, the 36ers provide the ARA with a high-profile platform to seek crucial donations.

The appeal’s objective is to provide tangible financial aid, with support directly translating into food vouchers, rental assistance, and funding for English lessons.

The campaign explicitly highlights the urgent need of families, such as Melika’s, who have fled hardship and still struggle to afford basic necessities like food, rent, and essential medical care for family members.

The partnership operates through the club’s not-for-profit arm, the Shooting Hoops Foundation, which was successful in securing a government grant to deliver the eight-week Harmony Hoops blocks.

ARA CEO, Chris Chalubek, previously stated that the power of sport through this collaborative program helps young refugees break down the barriers that turn starting over into struggle.
