ince its launch in February, Nine Entertainment’s live sport streaming platform, Stan Sport, has grown to almost 150,000 subscribers.

Nine Entertainment chief executive and former Stan CEO, Mike Sneesby, has shared the company’s progress in a presentation for the Macquarie Australia Conference.

The Australian Financial Review reports Sneesby announced Stan Sport has “quickly become Australia’s largest reaching sports streaming platforms”, at the virtual conference on the fourth of May.

“The launch of Stan Sport in February marked the move into live streaming and a further driver of (average revenue per user) across the base with Stan Sport established as a $10 add-on to the Stan service,” Sneesby said.

“This is a powerful proposition for Australian audiences and is providing sporting codes who partner with Nine and Stan the opportunity to reach mass free-to-air audiences and high yields subscription audiences in a model that maximises revenue opportunity,” he said.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports half of Stan Sport subscribers were new to the service, with Sneesby saying he is pleased with the platform’s initial performance.

“Stan Sport is off to a fantastic start with rugby driving strong engagement, active subscribers approaching 150,000 and live audience numbers across Stan and Nine tracking at around three times last year’s results across Foxtel and Ten,” Sneesby said.

Stan announced its intention to start live streaming sports, after securing a three-year deal with Rugby Australia worth $100 million in November last year.

The agreement meant the end of a 25-year partnership between Rugby Australia and Foxtel.

In a statement when the partnership was announced, Rugby Australia interim chief executive, Rob Clarke, said “we’ve recognised that the broadcast landscape has changed, and we’re changing with it.”

Stan Sport has also secured the rights to broadcast Wimbledon and Rolland Garros beginning this year.
