Women’s Premier League Secures Largest Deal in Women’s Domestic Football History

Barclays has renewed its title sponsorship of the Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship with a groundbreaking deal valued at £45 million (approximately $60 million). This multi-year agreement marks the largest sponsorship deal in the history of women’s domestic football.

Over the next three years, Barclays will invest approximately £15 million annually—doubling the value of its previous deal. This substantial increase in funding enhances the financial stability of both leagues and positions them for sustained growth and professionalisation.

This record deal comes on the heels of the WSL and Women’s Championship being taken over by Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) in August, a move aimed at improving governance and strategic direction. With Barclays’ increased investment, clubs within both leagues are expected to benefit from enhanced resources, leading to improved facilities, better player development programmes, and more effective marketing strategies. These changes are crucial for boosting attendance and viewership, which are key performance indicators for evaluating the success of women’s sports.

In addition to this renewed commitment, Barclays has extended its partnership with the Football Association (FA) for an additional three years, lasting until 2028. The bank has also renewed its sponsorship of the men’s Premier League for four more years, ensuring its position as the official banking partner until 2029. This multi-league involvement underscores Barclays’ broader strategy of fostering diversity and inclusivity within the sports sector.

Beyond the financial implications, this deal signifies a significant shift in the commercial landscape of women’s football. The partnership with Barclays not only provides immediate financial support but also sets a benchmark for future sponsorships, highlighting the potential for substantial corporate backing in women’s sports.
