WeWard, the free walking app that rewards users for staying active, has announced that Tennis legend and entrepreneur, Venus Williams, has joined the company as both an investor and ambassador, further solidifying WeWard’s mission to promote healthier and more active lifestyles globally.
The partnership comes at a crucial time, as global inactivity levels remain alarmingly high, where the World Health Organisation stated 31% of adults and 80% of adolescents do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity.
WeWard’s data further highlights that Americans walk nearly half as much as they should, ranking among the lowest in daily walking activity compared to other developed nations.
To mark the collaboration, WeWard released a 50-second video featuring Williams using the app to track her steps, culminating in a celebratory moment during a match after reaching her goal.
The campaign emphasises the importance of daily movement and aligns with Williams’ advocacy for personal wellness both on and off the court.
In addition to the promotional campaign, WeWard is making a significant impact through philanthropy by pledging an initial donation of USD$25,000 to CARE, Williams’ charity of choice, which supports global poverty alleviation by fostering economic growth, improved health, and access to education for women and underserved communities.
On join WeWard, Williams, said: “As someone who is deeply passionate about personal health and wellness, I’m thrilled to be partnering with WeWard.”
“A large part of staying well and active is simply by moving your body whichever way you can, and with WeWard, walking becomes a fun and rewarding experience. I’m excited to be part of a movement that encourages people to take that first step towards a healthier, more active lifestyle,” she said.
Further engagement from WeWard users will unlock additional contributions, with a maximum potential donation of USD$40,000 if community step goals are met. The potential maximum donation will also be used alongside a month-long ‘Venus Williams Championship’ within the app, where users can accumulate steps to unlock increasing donation amounts.
Special Venus-themed walking challenges will also be available, offering rewards such as tickets to sporting events, Garmin watches, gift cards, and more.
Williams’ involvement with WeWard follows the release of her wellness book, STRIVE, which presents a science-backed approach to health and self-improvement.
