V’landys Steps Into NRL Executive Chairman Role Amid Search For New Chief Executive

The National Rugby League (NRL) has entered a new leadership era, with Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) chairman, Peter V’landys, officially taking on the role of executive chairman. The governance move follows the departure of CEO Andrew Abdo, who has exited the rugby league governing body to assume the top job at Tennis Australia.

V’landys has assumed full executive responsibility for the sport’s day-to-day operations while the ARLC undertakes a global search for a permanent CEO. The transition aims to provide immediate continuity and stability following one of the most successful commercial periods in the history of the code.

During his nearly seven-year tenure as CEO, Abdo successfully navigated the NRL through the financial challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, oversaw the aggressive expansion of the NRLW competition, and confirmed the highly anticipated introduction of the Perth Bears franchise. In addition, Abdo’s administration recently secured a landmark seven-year, $5.3 billion broadcast rights agreement with Nine Entertainment and DAZN, cementing the largest media rights deal in Australian sporting history.

When announcing the transition in May, the ARLC confirmed V’landys would take on an executive leadership role until a permanent Chief Executive is appointed, saying the arrangement would ensure “continuity and stability for the game and experienced leadership for the key growth opportunities and expansion of the game.”

Praising the commission chairman as he prepared to leave the game, Abdo, said: “Peter is a genuine leader and he has backed me from the start. His vision for the future, his loyalty, support, guidance and drive has provided me with both inspiration and confidence.”

“Peter is someone you want with you for any challenge or opportunity,” the former CEO said.

Since taking over executive responsibilities, V’landys has indicated he will use the coming months to assess the strategic direction and operational structure of the organisation before deciding whether he wishes to remain in an executive leadership capacity beyond the interim appointment.
