ormer Queensland Government Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development, Kate Jones has been appointed to the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC).

Jones joins the ARLC after retiring from politics at last month’s election, and now fills a casual vacancy after a unanimous recommendation from the Nomination Committee to appoint her, replacing Amanda Laing who left in March.

The ARLC has also agreed to reappoint chairman, Peter V’landys and Professor Megan Davis for another three-year term.

V’landys said Jones’ knowledge of government and major events will be a major asset for the ARLC.

“Ms Jones is an impressive individual who has in depth knowledge of the most important aspects of the game for the sport to grow and prosper,” V’landys said.

“Kate has a real passion for rugby league and growing grassroots participation is a key area we will be calling upon as she is well experienced and skilled in that area,” he said.

Speaking about the reappointment of Professor Davis, V’landys said the board is now well-equipped to face the challenges ahead.

“The Professor is one of the most passionate and conscientious board members I have ever worked with,” V’landys said.

“Her contribution is immense, and the game is fortunate to have people of her calibre.

“The board now has a good spread of skills and each one will be needed to face the many challenges ahead,” he said.

Speaking on the appointment of Jones and reappointment of V’landys, former Queensland premier and current ARLC member, Peter Beattie, said the ARLC is in a great position.

“It is the most important thing,” Beattie said, discussing V’landys extension.

“V’landys is the best thing that has happened to rugby league.

“We need him around for 10 years, him coming back is important for the game.

“He gives the game stability and credibility.

“He has been the best chair that rugby league has ever had.

“Peter V’landys is the best sports administrator in Australia in any sport,” he said.

Discussing Jones, Beattie, who worked with Jones for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, said: “she did a brilliant job with the Commonwealth Games and will do a brilliant job with rugby league.”

“She is a great team player.

“I enjoyed working with her during the Commonwealth Games which were run on time and on budget.

“It was a unanimous decision of the commission.

“I learnt she was clearly passionate about rugby league having worked closely with her for two years.

“She has the energy and drive.

“Queensland loves her and she will be great for the commission,” he said.
