US To Host Next Edition Of Copa America

CONMEBOL has announced that the 2024 Copa America tournament will be held in the United States.

The news comes after an agreement was reached between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, the confederation that represents North, Central America and the Caribbean.

The tournament will feature 16 teams, with 10 teams from CONMEBOL and 6 teams from CONCACAF, where teams from the latter will qualify through the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League tournament.

Discussions are already underway for potential with the possibility that 2026 World Cup host cities could also be used for the Copa America.

For women’s national teams, CONCACAF has invited the top four teams from CONMEBOL to participate in the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup, a 12-team tournament that will also be held in the United States.

The two CONCACAF teams that will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics, the United States and Jamaica or Canada, will qualify directly for the CONCACAF W Gold Cup, with the remaining six teams being determined through the 2023 Road to CONCACAF W Gold Cup.

The four guest CONMEBOL teams have already been determined based on the results of the 2022 Women’s Copa America: Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay.

The U.S. has participated in the tournament four times previously, including the 2016 tournament which was also held in the U.S. and saw them reach the semi-finals.

In a statement, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez said: “We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects.”

“We want this passion to translate into more and better competitions and for football and its values to grow and strengthen throughout the hemisphere,” he said.

CONCACAF president, Victor Montagliani added, “We look forward to working together to ensure that football in both regions continues to thrive””

The original host, Ecuador, decided not to organise the tournament due to public security issues.
