Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley has announced his departure from the club to take on the role of Chief Operating Officer at the AFL, concluding more than a decade of dedicated service and leadership at the Swans.

Harley joined the organisation in November 2014 as General Manager of Football and later ascended to the CEO position in 2019. His leadership has been marked by significant achievements, including navigating the club through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, launching the Swans’ AFLW team, and overseeing the move to their new home at the Sellers & Colless Centre.

During Harley’s tenure, the Sydney Swans made three AFL Grand Finals appearances, achieved their inaugural AFLW finals qualification, and boasted an impressive membership count of over 75,000.

Commenting on the transition, Sydney Swans chairman, Andrew Pridham said: “On behalf of everyone at the Swans, I want to thank Tom for more than a decade of service.”

“He leaves our club in its strongest off-field position and provides a solid foundation for future success.”

“Tom’s passion for sport and compassion for people have defined his leadership style. He is highly respected, and his energy, intellect, and integrity have left a lasting impact.

“Although he may be moving on, his positive contributions will be felt for years to come,” Pridham conveyed.

Reflecting on his new appointment, Harley, added: “Football has been incredibly rewarding, and I view my role as a privilege. I am passionate about our sport and committed to supporting its growth.”

“While outcomes on the field matter, our broader purpose—enriching lives and bringing joy—has always been at the forefront. I am proud of the meaningful impact we’ve had.”

“From my start with Andrew Ireland to collaborating with exceptional coaches and staff, I am grateful for this journey,” Harley stated.

In a bid to ensure a smooth transition and allow adequate handover to his successor, Harley will remain in his position until at least the conclusion of the 2025 AFL men’s season, with a flexible departure date.

Looking ahead, Harley feels energised by the opportunities at the AFL level and expressed excitement about contributing to the sport’s development.

The Sydney Swans will now initiate an executive search for Harley’s successor, overseen by a sub-committee of the club’s Board consisting of Chairman Andrew Pridham, Alexandra Goodfellow, and Brian Tyson.
