The GIANTS and Western Sydney University Launch Innovative Sports Management Course

The GWS GIANTS and Western Sydney University have teamed up to introduce a immersive sports management course. The Diploma in Business (Pathway to Sport Management), delivered by The College at Western Sydney University, is designed to offer students hands-on experience and valuable insights into the dynamic realm of sports management.

Commencing in the first term of 2024, this unique collaboration underscores the commitment of both the GIANTS and the University to nurture the next generation of sports industry leaders through a comprehensive educational journey.

As part of the program, students will have the opportunity to enhance their career prospects with a variety of sport-focused electives and regular visits to the GIANTS’ headquarters at the VAILO Community Centre in Sydney Olympic Park. The course will expose participants to talks from sports professionals and provide a behind-the-scenes understanding of the operations of a professional sports organisation.

The diploma is not just an educational experience; it also opens doors to practical, work-ready exposure with the GIANTS, offering students a valuable entry point into the competitive sports industry. Successful completion of the Diploma serves as a pathway into the second year of Western Sydney University’s Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) program.

Professor Barney Glover AO, Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University, emphasised the institution’s commitment to providing world-class education and real-world learning opportunities. He stated, “Western Sydney University is proud to expand its partnership with the GIANTS, providing students with an exceptional and immersive educational experience that will develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of sports management.”

Glenn Campbell, Chief Executive Officer at The College, highlighted the diploma’s role as a direct route to a university degree and a rewarding career in sports management. He commented, “Not only will the diploma provide those interested in a career in sports management an exclusive behind-the-scenes look and a pathway into a rewarding career in the sports industry, it’s a terrific way to gain real-world practical experience with a professional sports club, while gaining a high-quality qualification and pathway to further studies.”

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews expressed the club’s commitment to enriching the lives of the Western Sydney community through educational opportunities. He said, “Since the inception of the GIANTS, we’ve always been a club that focuses on enriching the lives of the Western Sydney community and we’re delighted to continue our partnership with Western Sydney University to bring to life this fantastic educational opportunity.”

“With the state-of-the-art teaching that the University provides, along with the unique access that we’ll provide to our people and facilities, we see this diploma as a fantastic opportunity to get inside the inner sanctum of a professional sporting organisation while also gaining invaluable knowledge for a career in the sports industry.”
