Tennis West Unveils New Regional Committee to Drive Grassroots Strategy Across Western Australia

Tennis West has officially announced the establishment of a Board-appointed advisory group, launching the new Tennis West Regional Committee to overhaul strategic planning, facility development, and participation pathways across regional Western Australia.

Unveiled on October 22, 2026, the strategic initiative follows the Committee’s inaugural meeting held on 21 September, with a follow-up session locked in for December. The newly formed governing body is designed to provide vital regional insight and governance oversight, addressing key commercial and developmental priorities such as regional funding allocation, grassroots participation growth, competition pathways, and workforce initiatives.

According to the official announcement, “The Tennis West Regional Committee is a Board-appointed advisory group that helps shape the future of tennis across regional Western Australia.” By uniting key regional stakeholders, the organisation aims to bridge the gap between metropolitan administration and regional clubs.
The Committee comprises seven regional representatives alongside two Tennis West Board members, supported by Tennis West staff acting as guest attendees and subject matter experts. The appointed representatives bring deep expertise in community engagement, sports governance, and commercial project delivery across diverse WA regions:
  • Sara Garrido Diaz (Kimberley): Specialising in Aboriginal community services and stakeholder engagement.
  • Jaylan Smith (Pilbara): A Port Hedland business and community leader focused on governance and partnership development.
  • Tom Powell (Mid-West): A lifelong participant advocating for grassroots sustainability.
  • Megan Henry (Wheatbelt / Great Southern): A Tennis Australia coach with over two decades of experience in facility and participation development.
  • Shane Spengler (Goldfields-Esperance): Esperance Tennis Club President focusing on club governance and facility planning.
  • Michael Howes (South-West): Bringing extensive financial governance experience from the Dunsborough Country Club.
  • Felicity Cowan (Wheatbelt): An educator and sports administrator driving junior participation in Narembeen
The strategic formation of this committee underscores Tennis West’s commitment to decentralising resource allocation and ensuring regional clubs remain economically resilient and operational. As regional infrastructure demands evolve, the committee will play a pivotal role in advising on funding distribution, regional roadshows, and talent development programs.

With the second committee meeting scheduled for December, sports business analysts note that this structured representation will significantly enhance regional retention rates and commercial sustainability for tennis clubs statewide.
