TATA Group Attains Title Rights For WPL

TATA Group has announced that they have acquired the title rights for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in a five-year deal, with an official announcement expected soon.

As reported by Cricbuzz, TATA signed the agreement with The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the title sponsorship for the Women’s Premier League.

One of the biggest conglomerates in India, the deal follows TATA’s title rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the value of the WPL sponsorship deal is yet to be confirmed.

The BCCI had announced the sale of the rights, and TATA, who owns IPL title worship snapped up the same.

The BCCI had invited bids for the title rights on February 9, 2023, days before the inaugural auction.

Two weeks later, the Indian cricket board found their partners, boosting the league.

The title sponsorship and the broadcast deal with Viacom already make WPL one of the biggest franchise T20 leagues in the cricket fraternity.

Tata Sons, the holding company of TATA will have the rights for the first five years with Tata Motors and Tata financial services will be the products leveraged.

Tata Motors has been a constant in the IPL in recent seasons, with the Super Striker Award, with their cars – Tata Nexon, Tata Harrier and Tata Punch.

The Indian cricket board sold five teams for a combined 4670 crore, before 951 crore deal with Viacom18.

The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League will kick off on March 4, 2023, and the 22-game season will be played across two venues – DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

The final will be played on March 26, 5 days before IPL 2023.

The announcement comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India considering an equivalent to the men’s IPL for women.
